Museum Internships Winter / Spring 2026

The New Mexico Military Museum is pleased to announce multiple internship openings for Winter/Spring 2026. These internships offer hands-on experience in museum operations, collections care, exhibition installation, and oral history documentation.



One (1) Oral History/Audio Visual Intern. Oral History/Audio Visual Intern will work with the Museum Director and Collections Manager in capturing the oral histories of New Mexican Veterans, descendants, and surviving families of our Veterans. The Oral History/Audio Visual Intern will work to record, edit, save, and publish interviews for the museum’s archival holdings and for general publication on the museum’s podcast. In addition, the Oral History/Audio Visual Intern will be responsible for recording museum events for publication online to reach audiences beyond the museum.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Work with Collections Manager and Museum Director to schedule interviews

·         Work with the Museum’s recording equipment to capture oral histories from interviews and museum events

·         Edit recordings for quality to ensure clear audio for publication and future study

·      (Transpose interviews for archival holdings)

·         Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications: (Past use of audio-visual equipment and software is preferred but not required)

·         Familiarity with audio visual equipment such as: Audio-Technica Microphones and Tascam Mixcast Soundboard

·         Familiarity with audio visual editing and publication software such as: Adobe Audition, YouTube, iTunes, Spotify, Pod beam



Two (2) Exhibition Preparation Interns.  The New Mexico Military Museum is seeking two Exhibition Preparation Interns to work closely with the Museum Director and Collections Manager in installing an upcoming fine art exhibition.  This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with professional exhibition installation techniques and direct work with fine art.  Interns will learn essential skills in art handling, packing, transportation, and exhibition preparation.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include:

·         Assist with safe handling, packing, and movement of artworks.

·         Help prepare gallery spaces, including light cleaning, wall prep, and layout planning.

·         Aid in installing artworks following professional museum standards and direction from staff.

·         Support documentation processes, including condition reporting and inventory tracking.

·         Other duties as assigned.



Two (2) Collections Interns. Collections Interns will work with the Collections Manager on cataloguing and digitizing the collection. The Collections Intern will handle museum objects in accordance with museum best practices to input data into the museum’s collections software and appropriately mark and house objects for storage and possible future exhibit display. The Collections Intern will gain experience in collections management as well as other aspects of museum work around the New Mexico Military Museum as projects arise.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

·         Work with Collections Manager to catalogue and digitize collections

·         Safely handle objects in accordance with best practices

·         Mark objects with collections number using appropriate tools and methods

·         House and rehouse objects for long term storage

·         Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Requirements:

·         Knowledge of Museum Collections Best Practices

·         Attention to Detail

·         Ability with work with little to no supervision

·         An interest and knowledge in Military History is strongly preferred

 

Candidates should have availability to work between 8:30 A.M. and 4:00 P.M Monday-Friday.
